Chapter 6 · 6.1
Recovering a deleted file from Deleted files
Watch it in a short video
Accidentally thrown something away? No panic. Whatever you delete in your WebOké Nextcloud goes first to Deleted files, the Nextcloud recycle bin. From there, you can bring it back in two clicks.
How to recover a file
- In Files, click Deleted files at the bottom left (1).
- Find the file or folder in the list (2). The most recently deleted item is at the top. Use Search here at the top left to quickly find a name.
- Click Restore (3).

The file returns to its original location, with all its versions. If that folder no longer exists, Nextcloud puts the file in your main folder.
The list also shows the Original location, who deleted the file (Deleted by) and when (Deleted). Use Empty deleted files (4) to permanently remove everything in one go; only do this if you're sure.
Under the three dots in the row, you'll find Download (1), to save the file to your computer without restoring it, and Delete permanently (2), to delete it for good.

Multiple files at once
Tick the checkboxes next to the files in the list and choose an action at the top for the whole selection. To recover an entire deleted folder in one go, restore the folder.
Good to know
- Deleted files don't count towards your storage.
- Find out how long they're kept in How long does Nextcloud keep versions and deleted files?.
- If you delete a file on your computer in the desktop app's folder, or in the Nextcloud app on your phone, it ends up here too.
- If someone you share a folder with deletes a file, it goes to your Deleted files if you're the owner. So you can restore it yourself.
- Once something is gone from Deleted files, it's really gone: you can't recover it yourself anymore. Read Backups with WebOké: what we keep and what you can do yourself to find out how to protect yourself against this.
Tip: would you rather be asked a question before deleting something? Then turn on Warn before deleting a file under Files settings at the bottom left.
